(e.g. The least painful)</blockquote><div><br>I always used Linux and I think is an easy and fast option because most of popular distros, like Mandriva or ubuntu, have vtk packages and install the libraries is as easy as typing a line on the command line like "urpmi vtk-devel" or "apt-get install vtk-devel", and you have powerfull IDE's like kdevelop.
