There is a program for linux called RecordMyDesktop (<a href="http://recordmydesktop.iovar.org">http://recordmydesktop.iovar.org</a>) which you might find useful. I have never used it myself but I've visited the website and looks like this program can capture your desktop activity and record it into a movie file. If you want to do it with vtk itself, you need to look at vtkAVIWriter (windows) or vtkMPEG2Writer (multi platform).
