It is a little late to implement this for 3.0. If this is critical, we can implement it for 3.0.1 otherwise it will have to wait for 3.2.

Do we want to use tooltips for this? Or should the user have to push a button somewhere to enter the mode?

Tooltips -- do you mean when you hover over a curve?
-- sounds good either way.

Is there any behaviour on XY plot already planned for left-click drag mouse?

I was thinking that a nice feature would be to drag a rubberband box, and upon release, any points on the curves inside the box would be highlighted and/or annotated or perhaps a pop-up dialog with a list of values (especially if the list is long or the points too closely spaced)

Tooltip would automatically pop up when you hover over a point.

I planned on using the left mouse for selection on the line chart, which would include rubber band selection.

I wouldn't automatically pop up a dialog, but it could be a right click menu option.

Showing some annotation for the selected points would be nice, but there would have to be some sort of limit as you point out.
