Image Analysis for Medical Research

This course introduces attendees to open-source, freely available toolkits for pre-clinical medical image analysis and visualization.

  • ILS, Inc. - Research Triangle Park, NC


Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on solving real-world research problems and on providing hands-on experience.


Driving research problems to be addressed include:

  • Small animal image analysis
  • Tumor volume estimation and tracking
  • CT/PET image registration
  • Histology reconstruction


Technologies covered include:

  • CT, MR, PET image processing
  • Web-based image collection, distribution, and archiving.
  • The Insight Toolkit for medical image segmentation and registration (ITK)
  • The Visualization Toolkit (VTK)
  • ITK's image registration tools, segmentation tools, and derived tools
  • Kitware's VolView and ParaView applications

    • Dashboards and CMake
    • Insight Segmentation
    • Insight Registration

Cost per attendee is being finalized.

In addition to two days of instruction, attendees will receive

  • The Insight Software Guide (over 850 pages with illustrations)
  • The Visualization Toolkit User’s Guide.
  • Access to open-source software on the web

Attendees are expected to bring a high-end laptop computer with wireless connectivity.

Space is very limited, so register early to ensure availability.
