This example demonstrates how to embed 3D points into a 3D volume. An example set of points (sampled from a sphere) is [http://www.vtk.org/Wiki/Image:SpherePoints.vtp here]. The output is a vti file that can be viewed in paraview by opening it and changing "Display -> Representation" to "Volume". There are many parameters that can be tweaked - see the [http://www.vtk.org/doc/nightly/html/classvtkGaussianSplatter.html#_details documentation] for more details.

Download and Build EmbedPointsIntoVolume

Click here to download EmbedPointsIntoVolume. and its CMakeLists.txt file.

Once the tarball EmbedPointsIntoVolume.tar has been downloaded and extracted,

cd EmbedPointsIntoVolume/build 
  • If VTK is installed:
cmake ..
  • If VTK is not installed but compiled on your system, you will need to specify the path to your VTK build:
cmake -DVTK_DIR:PATH=/home/me/vtk_build ..

Build the project:

make

and run it:

./EmbedPointsIntoVolume

WINDOWS USERS PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to add the VTK bin directory to your path. This will resolve the VTK dll's at run time.
