[vtk-developers] adding points to a mesh

How do I add vertices and faces, or delete vertices and faces of a mesh?  
One way is to do it directly to the file.  Is there a way to do this after reading it into the vtkreader.
 
I was told I could use vtkExtractSelection, but I don't think I know how to do it yet.
