I would not think along these lines. Like I mentioned earlier that if the
driver loads the core profile then it I would not expect any rendering at
all if using display lists only. I don't think
that compatibility profile is going away soon (I will know more about this
in coming SIGGRAPH where I intend to talk to OpenGL ARB). Said that it
would be nice to
support VBO's and VAO's and I will be happy to work on it but we may need
some more time for it.
I believe it could be a bug in the driver or some other reason.
