The question arose when windoer if this is sufficient:

 fileOutputWindow->SetInstance(fileOutputWindow);

or if you must do:

  vtkOutputWindow* outputWindow = vtkOutputWindow::GetInstance();
  if ( outputWindow )
    {
    outputWindow->SetInstance( fileOutputWindow );
    }
